    I write a blog called Friendofthefarmer.com, but I have never met better friends of farmers than Cornell Agricultural Cooperative Extension staffers. Their work has been going on for over a century, since the founding of land grant universities with a charge of "broad-based education and public benefit." Now one group at Cornell is being threatened with the budget ax: the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program.

    After tapping trees for more than 40 years and commercially producing maple syrup for three, Shadow Hill Farm in Ontario last year joined the dozens of New York maple producers who put on Maple Weekend.

    That's now a two-weekend event — today, Sunday and March 27-28 — during which maple producers invite the public to visit their sugar bushes, sample some syrup and buy maple products.
