The New York Apple Association today announced the winners in their annual display contest for apples and Marzetti products in military commissaries.
The contest was open to all continental US military commissaries and ran from January 23 to February 28. Entries featured displays of New York apples and Marzetti Caramel Apple Dip and Apple Crisp.To view the rest of the story click on the following link:
DeCAGillibrand Announces Push to Bring Fresh Food to Underserved Communities

WASHINGTON – To help approximately four million New Yorkers living in so-called “food desert” neighborhoods that have little or no access to fresh, nutritious foods, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today joined Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer to launch the Healthy Food Financing Initiative. With food insecurity and obesity rates on the rise, Senator Gillibrand’s new legislation would invest $1 billion through loans and grants to help build approximately 2,100 new grocery stores and farmer's markets across the country, including an estimated 357 stores in New York State.

The village of Skaneateles was not too pleased to hear the news out of the New York Department of Transportation yesterday.
The DOT announced they have dropped the plan to ban trucks from using local roads that go through Finger Lake towns like Skaneateles. The proposal, created about two years ago, banned trucks from seven specific roads. Now that the proposal is gone, residents are frustrated.To view the rest of the story click on the following link:

Josh Eldred at Strawberry Fields hydroponic farm iThe New York Farm Bureau does not keep an official tally of young farmers, but Lisa Grefrath, head of the local Young Farmers and Ranchers Farm Bureau chapter, said there are about 100 Farm Bureau members age 18-35 in Cayuga, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties. The 2000 Department of Agriculture census listed 56 farmers in that age group in Cayuga County alone, and 370 in the five-county area.
