  • N.Y. Apples to India Could be First Step to Bigger Export Market

    In its first year of marketing to India, New York apple growers are expecting to ship 50,000 cartons of apples to that nation this year. And more markets are expected to open to Empire State growers, providing opportunities for future growth.

    Jim Allen, president of the New York Apple Association in Fishers, NY, told The Produce News, "We have also opened export programs to Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Africa, Thailand and Hong Kong this year. Movement into some of these countries is minimal, but it has opened doors and given us opportunities for future growth."

  • California Loses Dairy Farms as Iowa, Texas, Other States Lure Farmers with Less Regulation

    DES MOINES, Iowa - The number of dairies in California has plummeted by more than 500 in the past decade, with many moving to other states enticing them with promises of lower costs and simpler regulations.

    Eight states, ranging from Idaho to Iowa, have been courting dairies from California, the nation's largest milk producer. The reason is clear: Cows mean cash for local economies.

  • Winestock Encourages Sale of Wine in Grocery Stores

    Geneva, NY -- More than 2,000 people showed up at Three Brothers Winery in Geneva to celebrate the wine industry and encourage support of selling wine in grocery and convenience stores.

    The event, call Winestock NY 2010 festival, included food, wine and food tastings and highlighted the efforts of local small businesses.

Yet finding organized sports in the area was a challenge; there just was not many places where a 6 feet, 1,800 pounder could go and play.However, the Franklinville Maple Festival, Saturday and Sunday, kicks off the summer events for the equine community of Cattaraugus County.
