    Allowing the sale of wine in grocery stores is one of the more hotly debated issues in Albany. The idea was proposed in Gov. Paterson's budget and has met fierce resistance from the liquor store lobby, which is trying to preserve its monopoly.

    The proposal is a good one for the economy, for the future of New York's wine industry and especially for consumers, who will have much more convenient opportunities to purchase our quality New York wine offerings.

    In 2008, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a program that would bring green carts overflowing with fruits and vegetables to food deserts–city neighborhoods with few supermarkets, greenmarkets, or fresh produce. Residents in food deserts have high rates of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and other diet-related ailments. In the neighborhood we visited last week–Hunts Point in the Bronx–16.9 percent of residents had diabetes, according to recent city statistics. The rate on the Upper East Side? Just 5 percent.

  • Aerosmith to Get a Record $1 Million for State Fair Show

    The New York State Fair is guaranteeing Aerosmith a million dollars for its appearance this summer -- the highest ever paid a grandstand performer. The previous high was $800,000 to country stars Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift in 2008.

    If the August 26 show sells out, Aerosmith could earn an additional $300,000. The rock band will receive 85 percent of gross ticket sales over $160,000.

    LAKE PLACID — Although there’s a lot of talk about eating local foods in Lake Placid — and even more bumper stickers — the options are limited.

    But a new farm stand that plans to open Memorial Day weekend hopes to bring fresh produce and local products closer to the Olympic Village.Rob Hastings, manager of Rivermede Farm in Keene Valley, told the News Wednesday that he is expanding his operation by partnering with a private landowner in Lake Placid.“We’re really excited about this,” Hastings said.
