    DEC Proposals Would Cost Landowners

    The state Department of Environmental Conservation is being heavy-handed in its regulation of outdoor wood-burning boilers.

    Several of the outdoor furnaces can be found locally, particularly in rural areas. When operated correctly, they provide a reliable source of heat and use a natural, renewable resource -- wood, of which there is an abundant supply in upstate New York.

    LDC Discussed: St. Lawrence Farmers Highlighted Need at Recent Public Forums

    CANTON — A St. Lawrence County panel focused on agricultural issues wants to look into creating a local development corporation to finance farming ventures.

    Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board members on Thursday reviewed comments gathered during a series of public forums earlier this year on the future of the county's agricultural industry.

    OAKFIELD -- The first-grader from the John Kennedy Elementary School looked up at Kristen Hess and asked if the mostly black Holstein produced chocolate milk.

    Hess, a Lamb Farms employee who was leading a tour of the milking parlor, smiled. She told the student the cows at the farm were all Holsteins that produced white milk.

  • Farms Receive NYPA Rebates

    Power Bill Break: About 60 Area Farms Still Must Provide info to Get Discount Check

    Almost all north country farms have received their rebate checks under an electricity discount program from the New York Power Authority.

    In October, power authority officials and Gov. David A. Paterson came to Cape Vincent to announce the discount program, which divided $10 million from the sale of energy unused by Alcoa to pay 10 percent of about 3,500 north country businesses' power bills for the next year.
