    State Conservationist Astor Boozer of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced New York’s participation in an energy initiative designed to help producers improve energy efficiency on their agriculture operations. This initiative provides funding for individual on-farm energy audits intended to save both money and energy when fully implemented.

    Applications must be submitted by June 11, 2010 for fiscal year 2010 funding. Applications from eligible agricultural operations will be approved on a first come-first serve basis until funds are exhausted.

    Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) is recognizing the state’s dairy industry as an economic engine and vital aspect of New York’s communities and culture during Dairy Month in Central New York.

    “Dairy farming is an important part of the Upstate economy, and I think it’s important to draw attention to the contributions of the industry to the state, and to understand the challenges that dairy farmers face in today’s difficult economic climate” Valesky said. “As we buy our great New York State milk, cheese, and ice cream, I encourage everyone to recognize the hard work of our local dairy farmers.”

  • DuPont Reports Regulatory Approval for New Soybean Strain; Predicts Steady Earnings

    DuPont told investors today that it had received final regulatory approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to begin test cultivation in the United States of a genetically altered strain of soybeans called Plenish. At the J.P. Morgan Diversified Industries Conference in New York City, the president of DuPont's Pioneer Hi-Bred subsidiary, Paul Schickler, said that the approval represented a significant milestone.

  • A Veggie Tale: Cabbage Leaves a Long Paper Trail

    BYRON -- Five years ago S.J. Starowitz Farms added a new must-have for its employees. It wasn't new machinery or a highly technical gadget. Instead, employees were outfitted with tiny notebooks.

    Tom Starowitz keeps one close by - "I live with it," he said. He manages the farm's 225-acre cabbage operation. He writes down everything, and he has codes for 15 fields of cabbage, allowing the farm to keep track of everything done to its cabbage crops, and pinpoint the finished product to any of the fields in case there is a food safety concern.
