Conference Part of Tour to Promote His Renew Upstate New York Economic Development Plan

Congressman Scott Murphy (NY-20) hosted a Buy Local Conference in Greenwich. The Conference was an opportunity for Congressman Murphy, farmers, consumers and community leaders to discuss different approaches and strategies to help farmers and agriculture businesses succeed in the new and increasingly global economy. It also provided attendees the opportunity to discuss these strategies with experts on panels, assembled vendors and other organizations.

“Agriculture is a critical part of Upstate New York’s economy, and we need to continue to ensure that they have all of the information and resources they need to succeed in this new global economy,” said Rep. Murphy.

State Commences Largest Survey Yet for Plum Pox Virus

ALBANY -  State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker announced the commencement of the State's largest survey to combat Plum Pox Virus, a serious plant virus that infects stone fruit trees, reducing fruit yields and disfiguring fruit to the point that it becomes unmarketable. New York is the only remaining state in the nation with Plum Pox.

"As the last state in the nation with this physically and economically debilitating virus, it is imperative that we have a full-court press on our survey efforts this summer, and that is exactly what we plan to do," the Commissioner said.

A Weekend at Farm Camp, With Lessons in the Earthy Side of Food

GREENWICH, N.Y. — Outside the kill room at the Garden of Spices, a band of little boys played by a parked truck. Between giggles, they kept a curious eye on the open room. Inside, a half-dozen visitors surrounded their father, Ben Shaw, as he grasped a chicken.

Mr. Shaw spoke slowly: Grab both feet and turn the chicken upside down. Get control of the wings. Stretch the neck tight and taut the skin to help the cut. Then, he swiftly slit the chicken’s neck.
