  • Law Helps Vineyard, Orchard Owners

    Albany, NY -- A new law has been passed in Albany that supports growth and investment in vineyards and orchards in New York state.

    The law streamlines an existing property tax exemption for new or replanted vineyards or orchards, said state Sen. David Valesky, D-Oneida.

  • Deadline July 1 for Ag Safety Awards

    Albany, NY -- The New York State Agricultural Society's Farm Safety Award recognizes New York farm operators who have unique and successful farm safety programs for their employees.

    Deadline to apply for this year's award is July 1. Applications must include a summary of farm safety programs and activities. Nominees are evaluated, and up to two farms are selected to receive recognition and a cash award of $500 per farm, sponsored by Cargill, Inc.

  • Farmers Hopeful Blight Won't Return this Year

    Last year, Pat Sheldon threw away approximately $8,000. When "late blight" hit her tomato plants in June, she had to demolish the whole cash crop in order to save her potatoes.

    "If you have a nice crop on a plant, you might be able to generate $10 in sales per plant, which is not unreasonable if you're selling at a farmer's market," said Sheldon, a vegetable farmer and co-owner of Sheldon Farms off State Route 22 in Salem...

    So far this summer, there has not been any sign in New York of the ferocious airborne fungus that causes late blight, but area gardeners are advising local growers to routinely check their plants.

  • Mid-Hudson School Districts Focusing on Nutrition

    Whether you look in local cafeterias or the White House, hockey-puck hamburgers are under attack. The reason: Obesity is reaching epidemic levels among children nationwide.

    In response, a lot of people are scrutinizing school lunches. Last week Congress introduced bills to reauthorize and revise the Child Nutrition Act.
