Legislature Also Weighs Bill with Expanded Rights

Hudson Valley farmers would be required to offer their workers at least one day of rest each week under a compromise bill awaiting action in Albany in the waning days of the Legislature session.

The requirement represents one piece of a larger package of expanded labor rights that New York farmworker advocates have pursued for a decade with strong opposition from farmers, who say they would impose crippling costs on an already fragile industry.

Dennis Derryck, a 70-year-old mathematician and professor at the New School for Management and Urban Policy, has become the unlikely matchmaker between the two worlds. Mr. Derryck, who lives in Harlem, is Schoharie County’s newest farmer. His spread is Corbin Hills Road Farm...the cornerstone of a project linking the upstate rural and downstate urban through beets and berries, an effort to get healthy food into what is the poorest Congressional district east of the Mississippi.

“Dump the Milk” Protest Set for July 4

A dairy farm in upstate New York plans to dump milk on July 4 to protest low milk prices.

“We just need to make the farmers realize it is our government and our co-ops that have put us against each other,” Robin Fitch told WKTV in Utica, N.Y. “It is not farmer to farmer. Our heart goes out to every one of them. We are not in it to save our farm. Our big goal is to save all American farms.”

Wind Power Conference to be Held Thursday in Syracuse

The New York Power Authority will hold a conference in Syracuse Thursday for businesses interested in participating in off-shore wind power projects.

The “Get Listed” conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Syracuse Center of Excellence at 727 E. Washington St.
