    After 30 years of debate, and two years of trying, the legislative battle to sell wine in New York grocery stores drags on.

    The final revenue budget Gov. David Paterson released last week included a provision that would permit the sale of wine in grocery stores, a move that would raise roughly $150 million in taxes in the next two years, according to supporters of the measure...

    “Albany is desperate for cash. That will be the final determination,” said Peter Gregg, a spokesman for the New York Farm Bureau, an agriculture lobby.

  • Lease a Tree: Community Supported Fruit from Local Farms

    Come mid-September, there are very few things better than an afternoon spent in an apple orchard and eating crisp apples right from the tree. Now some orchard owners are finding a better way to capture that experience for their customers while capturing a fair price for the fruits of their labor as well, and it looks a bit like Community Supported Agriculture.

    Here's the deal: you pay a reasonable price at the beginning of the spring, usually between 50 and 100 dollars to lease a fruit tree. The folks who run the orchard look after your tree and take care of it for you throughout the summer and in the fall, when the tree is heavy-laden with fruit, you venture out and pick as much as you like from your tree.

  • New York Maple Syrup to Be Sold at Wegmans

    First Major Retailer in State to Carry New "New York Maple – Taste the Tradition" Logo

     New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today joined representatives of Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. at their Henrietta store to recognize the first major food retailer in the State to carry New York maple syrup, utilizing the industry's new "New York Maple – Taste the Tradition" logo. New York maple syrup is now being proudly featured at all 75 of Wegmans' stores, including those in and out of New York State.

  • Volunteers Gather to Help Family Rebuild Tornado-ravaged Farm

    It has been a whirlwind few days for an Oswego County couple trying to regroup after a tornado hit their farm Monday night.

    The winds ripped apart some barns and parts of the house Bruce and Margaret Meldrim have spent the last seven plus years redoing. But the family on Jackson Road is not picking up the pieces alone.
