    EAGLE BRIDGE, N.Y. -- When the owners of Eagle Bridge Custom Meat & Smokehouse opened the doors of their new slaughtering facility in November, they expected to kill no more than 1,200 animals by the end of their first year in business.

    Just over eight months later, they've easily surpassed 2,000 animals -- including pigs, sheep, goats and cattle -- and are booked solid through December.

  • With Milk Prices Low, Dairy Farmers Turn to Beef Cattle

    Low Milk Prices Cause Hardship

    In what used to be a dairy farm region, more and more farmers are raising beef cattle, either to keep their farms operational or try to turn a profit amid sour milk prices.

    Numerous beef outfits have opened up in the mid-Hudson over the past decade, including at least 15 new farms just in the last five years, said Audrey Reith, the equine and livestock educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County.

    Rep. Tim Holden's Chesapeake Bay cleanup bill has cultivated an endorsement from the American Farm Bureau Federation.

  • Greenmarket Opens at NYC’s World Financial Center

    The World Financial Center Greenmarket, a community market featuring 10 local farmers from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, has opened and will continue through November. The  Greenmarket will offer fresh, organic foods and plants including vegetables, fruit, orchids, hydrangeas, baked goods and meats every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
