Lake Ontario Fruit Growers Share Tips

Rod Farrow, co-owner, Lamont Fruit Farm, WaterportWATERPORT — They came from Brazil, Oregon, Canada, Massachusetts — several states and countries — to see some the latest breakthroughs in apple varieties, growing techniques and new equipment for spraying orchards and picking apples.
About 150 members of the International Fruit Tree Association are spending three days this week touring orchards in Orleans and Wayne counties, and seeing research at the Geneva Experiment Station. Senior representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other federal agencies will hold public listening sessions on conservation, recreation and reconnecting people to the outdoors. The sessions will be held in the Hudson River Valley—whose magnificent landscapes have served as a cradle of American History.

Montgomery — Orange County’s equestrians have long dreamed of a horse park near home. But in these hard economic times, even a gift that would bring that dream closer is getting some hard scrutiny.

Try farmers markets, which are not only eco friendly but give you the chance to try new delicious foods. One of the largest markets in New York City is the Union Square Greenmarket, which hosts over 140 farmers each week.
