Transition Cow Care Focus of Dairy Skills Classes

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Hands-on and classroom instruction in the care of cows transitioning from one lactation to the next is the latest course offering by the Wyoming County Dairy Institute.

Classes for dairy farmers and farm workers are slated for 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Feb. 9, 16, 22 and 27, and March 2 and 6 at the offices of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wyoming, Genesee and Ontario counties.

Veterinarians and instructors from Cornell Cooperative Extension and Alfred State will discuss needs of transition cows, calving management, performing physical exams, post-calving treatments, record keeping, and protocols. Participants will receive practical training for implementation on the farm.

Class participants may be eligible for course credit through Alfred State College.

The Wyoming County Dairy Institute is a project of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County and other collaborators to provide workforce development training for the state’s dairy industry. Courses in quality milk production, farm accounting, calf care, cow health, reproduction, and more provide professional development for farm workers, and provide certification to those seeking farm jobs.

The Wyoming County Dairy Institute is funded in part by the NY Center for Dairy Excellence, which also provided funds for dairy farm skills training in the northern, northwestern, and southwestern regions of New York State.

The NY Center for Dairy Excellence is a collaboration of dairy farmers and agri-business to identify high-ranking needs and jumpstart programming for dairy farmers. The Center is an initiative of the NY Farm Viability Institute, a farmer-led nonprofit group that awards grants to applied research and outreach education projects that help farmers improve profitability. The Institute and Center received funds from the NYS legislature and Department of Agriculture and Markets.
